#25 Theories of Relativity overall

I thought that the book was good. I was a little bit disappointed with the ending though. I was hoping that Dylan's grandfather would help him in some way but after the 4/5 you didn't really hear about him after that. I didn't really understand why Dylan was talking to Albert Einstein. I know that the book started with Dylan reading a book by Albert Einstein but I don't think hallucinating a conversation with him really fit with the rest of the story. I was glad however, to find out that Dylan was going to accept the job that Glen offered him because that meant he might be able to get his life back. Although, I think I could have predicted that that would happen, I was just hoping for a better ending.

Jenna agreed to go to Dylan's Grandfather's house but didn't show up at the bus stop when the time came. So Dylan went there alone. When he got there, he found out that his grandfather was dieing in a nursing home. He went to see him for the first time since he was little. But his grandfather was unresponsive so he couldn't talk to him. Dylan also found out that his dad. who he never knew, was living in the old farm house. Dylan went to visit him on Christmas day but got in a fight and wasn't really accepted so he went back to Toronto. I felt really sorry for him at this point because his grandfather was one of his only chances to get his life back. When he got back he got beat up by Vulture and the "bandanna kids" because he tried to invite Jenna to go with him. I think that Dylan's grandfather will die and Dylan will inherit some money or valuable property.

Dylan is starting to get some support. Earlier in the book he met a guy named Glen who seemed like a nice guy. Glen has decided to help Dylan and give him a job as a tutor. I think that right now, Dylan is feeling a little better about things mostly because he now has a job. But I also think he is feeling a little sad and confused. He is unable to spend Christmas with his brothers so Glen helps him buy presents for them. Dylan went to see his mother and brothers. His mothers change in attitude seemed quite surprising to Dylan. He went to see his mom so he could find out where his grandparents lived, only to find out that his mother had neglected to give him a letter that was sent by his grandfather when his grandmother died. He then found out that his Grandfather invited him to live with him. If I was Dylan at this point I would be very angry at my mother. So at the moment Dylan is on his way to his grandfathers house, and he is taking Jenna with him. I think that he will end up living with his grandfather and possibly Jenna will too.

I am starting to learn more about Dylan. You can tell that he really loves his brothers; Jordan and Micha. He said that his mom was not a very good mother especially around Christmas. So Dylan would try to make their Christmas as special as possible, even if it meant stealing presents for them.
I think that Dylan also really likes Jenna but he can't really tell anyone because Vulture told him to stay away from her. I think that Dylan really seems like a caring person in general. I also learned about this girl named Amber. She was another person living on the streets but she also works for Vulture with Jenna. Amber let Dylan stay with her the first week that he was kicked out of his home but he left when he realized that she was kind of taking advantage of her. They don't really like each other anymore but once again, Dylan still cares about her, especially after he finds out that she is pregnant. Dylan has found a youth center to stay in and shower now, this is where he met a girl named Amber who is a volunteer but used to be homeless. At the end of the section Dylan takes Jenna, Amber and Twitch to a church for a free meal he sees Amber there again. I think that she will help him some how eventually.

#20 Romeo and Juliet

So much has happened in the story so far. Although I admit, it is very confusing and hard to understand.   I can understand how Romeo and Juliet are feeling right now, especially Juliet. Romeo and Juliet secretly got married the only ones that knew were the nurse and the friar. I thought things were a little rushed for their marriage. Then, the day of their wedding, Romeo killed Tybalt- Juliet's cousin and was banished. I know that Romeo killed a guy but I feel kind of bad for him at this point. He is banished and basically can never see his wife again. Then, Juliet was being forced to marry Paris. I think that Juliet should have run away with Romeo and that would have solved a lot of things.

# 19 Theories of Relativity

Not a lot has happened so far. There is a homeless guy who is sixteen years old named Dylan. His mother kicked him out of the house after they had an argument on his birthday. He spends most of his time on the streets and in the library. He has met many different people. The main one is a girl named Jenna who is around the same age. They are similar but she works for a kind of a gang and has money. Dylan on the other hand would be lucky to get a meal. Another person that he has met is a guy named "Twitch" who's name is actually Aaron. They call him Twitch for obvious reasons but Dylan thinks that there is something seriously wrong with him. Twitch seems to enjoy following Dylan. I don't think he really minds, but when Twitch said he knew a guy who would let him stay with him. Dylan accepted the offer but it was not what he expected so he left and went back to the streets. In his loneliness on the streets, he has created different theories. At the beginning he noted that one in four people will give him money or food. I think he will probably continue to make theories like this as the story progresses.

Act 3 scenes one and two

1. Why does Benvolio want the Montagues to get off the streets?
He said that the day was hot and the Capulets were outside. If they were to meet they would get in a fight. He wanted to avoid fighting.


2. How does Mercutio respond to him?
He kind of makes fun of Benvolio because it seems like he is running away from a fight with his enemy. 


3. What is Benvolio afraid of when Tybalt shows up?
He was afraid that they would get in a fight in the public place. 

4. How does How does Romeo's response surprise Tybalt?
He was expecting Romeo to accept his offer and fight but instead he started to leave and told him he didn't want to.

5. Mercutio's famous last words (what phrase does he utter upon realizing he is dying)?
A plague o' both your houses! They have made worms' meat of me: I have it, And soundly too. Your houses!


6. How does Romeo seem to blame Juliet for what has happened?
He says that Juliet's beauty made his temper softer and that is why he didn't fight.

7. After Romeo kills Tybalt, what does Benvolio urge him to do? why?
He urges Romeo to leave because the prince would find out what happened and kill him.

8. What does Benvolio emphasize in his explanation of the events to the Prince?
He emphasizes that Romeo didn't want to fight and was being calm and humble and trying to keep things peaceful. 

9. What does Lady Capulet want to see happen?
She doesn't believe Benvolio so she wants the prince to kill Romeo.

10. What does the Prince rule?
That Romeo must be executed if anyone finds him.

1. Describe Juliet's mood at the beginning of the scene.
She is happy and very in love with Romeo. I don't think she knows about what happened. She just wants Romeo to come back.

She says: O serpant heart, hid with flowering face! Did ever dragon keep so fair a cave? Beautiful Tyrant! Friend angelical! Dove-feather'd raven! Wolvish-ravening lamb!

3. According to the Nurse, what does this show?
That there is no honesty, faith or trust in men.

4. Juliet's attitude changes again. Describe.
She gets very sad and confused all of a sudden. She was not really sure to think about what she had been told. She didn't know if she should believe that Romeo killed her cousin.

5. What does the Nurse offer to do for Juliet?
She tell Juliet that she will find Romeo to comfort her.

Act 1 Scene 5

1. What words does Romeo use to describe his first sight of Juliet?

-Tybalt wants to kill Romeo when he sees him at the party.

Capulet tells Tybalt to leave Romeo alone because he wasn't really causing any problems and he knows that if Tybalt and Romeo get in a fight the party will be over.

4. Does Tybalt agree to anything?
He agreed to leave Romeo alone during the party but he basically says that he will kill him later.

5. Rate Romeo's opening lines to Juliet. Explain.
On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Romeo's opening lines to Juliet an eight. He was quite forward, he didn't even know her and he was talking about kissing her. Although you don't really hear guys talking like that these days so to Juliet it probably seemed very romantic.

6. What does Romeo say to the news about Juliet's family?
He says: O dear account! My life is my foe's debt. Which means he owes his life to his enemy. 

7. What does Juliet say once she is told that Romeo is a Montague?
My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me, That I must love a loathed enemy.

8. Describe the mood at the end of this scene/act.
The mood is kind of sad and intense. Both Romeo and Juliet find out that their parents are enemies and they aren't really sure what to do or what is going to happen.

1. What is meant by a "man of wax"?
I think that a man of wax means that the man is a man who seems almost perfect. Maybe the "wax" means that he seems like he has been sculpted to look so perfect or hansome. 

2. Describe Juliet

According to Romeo, Juliet is Beautiful. It seems like after she meets Romeo she doesn't really care about anything. Even the fact that their families hate each other. So I think its easy to say that she is kind of "easy going" and doesn't worry very much. 

3. Describe her nurse
Juliet's nurse cares about  what happens to Juliet but  not what Juliet wants for herself. The nurse wants Juliet to marry Paris even though Juliet doesn't really want to. So I guess in a way, the nurse is caring especially for Juliet. She seems to be very close to Juliet.

4. Describe her mother
Juliet's mother is kind of like the nurse, not really caring about about Juliet's opinion and hoping that she will marry Paris. She gets along with Juliet but isn't as close as the nurse. She is also very rich.

5. As a young person of the 21st Century, what is your reaction to this pressure being placed on young Juliet?

I think that it is unfair to Juliet for everyone to assume that she loves Paris. I know that her father could have just told her to marry Paris but he didn't. Instead, basically everyone in the family is telling her that it would be a very wise decision to marry Paris. So she doesn't really have a choice. She is expected to make the right decision. If she doesn't choose to marry Paris I think that most of her family will probably look at her like she did something terribly wrong. So I guess what I'm saying is that it is a huge choice for a fourteen year old girl to make. One that she shouldn't have to make.

Shakespeare is basically telling you what happens in the story. I'm guessing that he did this so you know what to expect and there are'nt any huge surprises. I personally like surprises better but I guessing it makes people more excited to see the play if the prologue sounds exciting.

We learn that there are two different house holds (families) who live in the same village. Both of these families don't like eachother. I think that a pair of star crossed lovers is Romeo and Juliet. It says that they take thier life so I think it means that they are from different families and kill themselves. It also says that Romeo and Juliet's death did not stop their parents from fighting. When he says "two hours traffic of our stage," I think he means that the play is two hours long and if you listen carefully you will enjoy the play.

     A naval officer arrives just in time to save Ralph from being killed by Jack. I seems like very uncreative way to ent\d the story compered to the rest of the book. I didn't expect it to end as well for Ralph. I was also  thinking, this was the second time that they had caught the island on fire. I'm wondering why no one saw it before.
      I'm not positive but I think that William Golding was trying to get the message across that we are all evil. I'm guessing that he thinks that if anyone wad to be trapped on an island they would have been the same as the boys in the book.
     I personally didn't enjoy this book It was very graphic and even if it was basically showing what someone would be like it they were in that situation. I do not like to picture myself like that. I also found it kind of boring until the last three chapters when the story started to speed up. I would not read it again.

Piggy is getting tired of not being able to see anything to he persuades Ralph to get his glasses back. I don't think he really wanted to though. Ralph doesn't really seem scared of Jack at all but the others do. Ralph doesn't think that Jack would actually kill him. but they bring spears anyway. I think that they should have been more cautious thought because Jack has killed a person and several pigs. He seems to really enjoy killing. When they are there Ralph also brings up the fact that the have fire and need to keep it going. Although, I don't think that Jack really cared about being rescued. Jack got angry and started a fight. Roger rolled a boulder over on Piggy, killing him, destroying the conch. This meant that Ralph's power was completely destroyed. Jack takes Sam and Eric and Ralph is alone. He would have to be very careful if he wanted to live.

Ralph, Piggy, Sam and Eric have given up on keeping the fire going. Jack and his tribe continue to hunt for pig's. Ralph and Piggy convince each other that they didn't kill Simon. Although they were there at the time and they did help kill him. They don't discuss it anymore after that. Jack's tribe also decides not to talk about it. Jack and his tribe also decides that they don't want to have to steel fire from Ralph anymore so they steel Piggy's glasses. I don't know why they needed to take Piggy's glasses because Ralph already told them that if they wanted fire, they could just ask and he would let them have it. Instead, they start a fight In the middle of the night, steel Piggy's glasses and now, Piggy can't see anything. I realize that Jack doesn't like Piggy but I think this chapter really shows it. He doesn't care if Piggy can see, he only cares about having fire to cook pigs.

In this chapter the two tribe are together eating the pig that Jack's tribe caught. I've noticed that many of the children- especially Jack are becoming much more savage. They enjoy killing things and don't regret killing anything. They even joke around with killing each other. Then Roger pretends to be a pig and they almost kill him. Meanwhile, Simon has discovered that there is no beast. It was only a man in a parachute. As he goes to tell the others, they attack him. I didn't really understand why they killed him, but I think it was because they thought he was the beast. At the same time the parachute filled with water and floated out to sea along with Simon's body. Things are getting very dark.

In this chapter, Jack got tired of listening to Ralph so he split off into another tribe. The people who joined this tribe were Simon, Roger and several of the younger children. This left Piggy, Ralph, Sam and Eric alone to watch the fire. They soon realized that it is very difficult to keep a fire lit with four people so they let it remain unlit for a while. Jack went out hunting with his tribe and caught a mother pig. I thought it was very cruel to kill a mother pig although it was nice of him to share it with Ralph's tribe. They left the pig's head on a stick for the beast. I was confused at the end of the chapter because I wasn't really sure who the Lord of the Flies was and why it was suddenly talking to Simon.

I think that this chapter is more exciting that some of the previous chapters. The boys are all scared yet they still want to enjoy themselves on the island. I think that Simon is being very mysterious. He doesn't really mind being on his own. He makes it clear that he doesn't believe that there is actually a beast so when it's dark, he starts to go back to the shelters by himself. Some of the other boys also didn't want to continue for the night so they turned back with Simon. Leaving Jack, Ralph and  Roger to continue searching. I understand why the boys started to head back, but I am wondering why Jack, Ralph and Roger decided to continue. Especially after Ralph admitted that they were being foolish to continue on.

In this chapter, Sam and Eric are outside watching the fire while the other boys are trying to sleep in the shelters. They heard some noises behind them and started running. They said that it followed them back to the shelters. I think that Sam and Eric would have been terrified in this chapter. They had heard different stories about how horrible the beast is. Now that they had actually seen it, they knew that they would have to run away to save themselves.

When Sam and Eric told Ralph about this, Ralph decided that this was getting to dangerous. He knew that he would have to hunt the beast in order to end their fears for the beast. Although they didn't really know what to expect, the older boys still went off to find it leaving the littluns' with Piggy. I think, knowing how scared all of the boys were, they would be some what excited knowing that their fears would soon end.

Ralph called another meeting with all of the boys. He decided that this meeting would be about business and nothing else. For the majority of the meeting they were talking about the beast. Almost all of the boys were getting very scared. They didn't really know what it was. There were many suggestions and ideas of what it might be. Simon thought it was themselves- their fear. I thought that this was kind of interesting because only a few of the boys had thought that they'd seen the beast. The rest believed that it was real. However, like Simon, I also think that it is just their own fears and imaginations getting the better of them. Being as most of the boys believed that the beast was a creature they went out to find it.

#8- Painted Faces and Long Hair.

Jack was still hunting for pigs. He thought that the reason why he couldn't catch one was because they could see him. So he got the twins to help him blend in with his surroundings. Then, he finally caught his pig. Also, In this time, Ralph saw smoke from a ship in the horizon. I think he was very frustrated because this may have been his only chance to get off the island. But it was not possible for the ship to see a fire because it had gone out. Jack was supposed to make sure it was always burning but he forgot and went hunting instead.
I think that Jack was just really excited to catch a pig and so he completely forgot about the fire. But I can also see why Jack was so frustrated because it may have been their only chance to get off the island and Jack didn't seem to care.

#7- Huts on the Beach

In this chapter, Ralph is getting very frusterated. Jack is off hunting while Simon and Ralph are building shelters. I feel that things would be much more organized if everyone was helping eachother in this chapter. Instead, the majority of the boys are swimming. Also, Simon goes off and builds another fort in the middle of the forest. It doesn't really make sense for him to do this because he has heard stories of the beastie. for some reason, this doesn't bother him. I think that maybe he wants to be indepentant or try to capture the beastie. Maybe he wants to kill it so it doesn't hurt anyone.

#6- Fire on the Mountain

It is the first couple of days on the mountain. From the way they are acting, I think that some of the boys are excited to be on the island with no parents, and others are worried that they will never get off. The older boys are taking control. They are not listening to the younger boys, or Piggy's opinions. Only there own. I don't think that in this chapter, Ralph is being a very good or responsible leader. He made the rule that anyone holding the conch could speak with the exception of himself who could speak all of the time. This was unfair to everyone also. Then, Ralph tells them to make a fire. Imimmediately, every boy except for Piggy goes to get fire wood. Once they had the fire started. They did not watch it closely and it spread and burned half of the mountain. i feel this was not a wise decision for Ralph to make. A boy went missing because he was careless and didn't seem to care about anyone else except for himself, Jack and Simon.

#5- Why do Good?

I think that a lot of people just naturally like to help people in need. I like to help people because I usually feel sorry for them. I try to picture myself their position and understand how they feel. However, I do think that some people do good to get attention. I know that there are awards for people who help the community, so they probably want to make themselves look like a good person. I also think that some people are good because that is how they were raised. Their parents or religion has taught them to have good manures and help others.

#4 Bullying

I think that bullying comes from people being insecure about themselves. They bully others because it makes themselves feel better. I think bullying still happens because they think that if no one sees it happening, the only one getting hurt is the one being bullied. Also, if they threaten the person if they tell anyone, then they have nothing to worry about. The only difference between male and female bullying is that male bullying is more physical and female is verbal (eg. spreading rumours.)

 

 

 

#3 Lord of the Flies

So far, I think that most of Lord of the Flies is slow moving and boring. It is also some what confusing because the author leaves parts out or gives small hints, or small details, so you are left to figure out what happened before they got on the island. Although, I do find the setting quite interesting. I think it is a good setting because it is on a tropical island with no adults which makes it seem more intense. Especially considering that most or all of the boys probably have little or no experience in that kind of setting, so they don't really no what to do.

        For my memoir I chose the time when  I learned how to milk a cow. It was a significant event in my life because it was my first job and the farm has been family run for 100 years.

#1 Memory from grade nine english

  One of the many memories I have from grade nine english is when the class read Cue for Treason. I remember it the most because I didn't like it.
